Dwight Merriam represents developers, local
governments, landowners, and advocacy groups in land development and
conservation issues. Dwight has published over 200 professional articles on
land use law, and authored or edited five books: Inclusionary Zoning Moves
Downtown, The Takings Issue, The Complete Guide to Zoning, Eminent Domain
Use and Abuse: Kelo in Context, and At the Cutting Edge 2008. He is a Fellow
and Past President of the American Institute of Certified Planners, a former
Director of the American Planning Association (APA), and Past Chair of APA's
Planning & Law Division. Dwight is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of
Chartered Surveyors and was elected in 2008 to be one of the 50 United
States members of the Anglo-American Real Property Institute. He is also a
member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and the Counselors of
Real Estate. He has taught land use law at Vermont Law School since 1994.
Dwight received his B.A. in sociology (cum laude) from the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst, where he was also elected to Phi Kappa Phi. He
received his Master of Regional Planning from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Juris Doctor at Yale Law School where he
received the Ivan Meitus Prize for his article on the transfer of
